We’ve just released our first basic Bar Model resource! This is a guide which we have created to support the initial introduction of Bar Models in schools.

Bar Modelling is a unique visual approach which can be very consistent in helping children understand a word problem and then see what the next steps are to solving the problem. Bar Model is not the end product but more of a means to reach the end product.

Having seen many children and teachers get very excited about Bar Modelling in both our training courses and in-house training, we also know that there are many teachers who have never seen Bar Modelling or want to find out more about this maths problem-solving technique. This is why we decided on creating a Bar Model resource which teachers can look over and refer back to so that they can start their journey to adjusting their pedagogy so that more children can benefit from the amazing approach!

This Bar Model guide looks at pre-requisite knowledge before attempting to use bar models in the classroom and also the two key types of models, yes there really is only two types of bar models! The guide is a good way to get a firm understanding of most types of bar models for at mainly primary level and also for some repeated topics found in secondary maths as well.

This is a basic bar model guide, which means we haven’t covered some more complex types of models which are derivatives of the part-whole or comparison bar models. More complex bar models such as the before and after situations will hopefully be covered in future Bar Model guides, though we haven’t started work on those as of yet and won’t be doing so for a while as we are very busy with training schools and creating such resources does take a lot of our time!
